The South Carolina (Continental State Frigate) collection, 1781-1945.

Consisting of photostatic copy of ship's log, 4 Aug. 1781 - 22 May 1782, maintained by Commodore Alexander Gillon, recording weather observations and course of ship's first voyage, which originated in Texel, Netherlands with stops at Carone, Spain, Charleston, S.C., and Havanna, Cuba, including account, 25 Aug. 1781, re the capture and burning of a Liverpool privateer in the North Sea, and ship's log re naval engagements during the American Revolution. Twentieth century correspondence re the Ship's history includes letters, 17 April 1945-14 Nov. 1945, between Lt. William L. Carbine, Kathleen Lewis, and University of South Carolina president Admiral Norman M. Smith discussing Carbine's discovery of the bell from the South Carolina in New Delhi, India, Carbine's presentation of the bell to the University South Caroliniana Society, and attempts to research the history of the ship. Other correspondents include U.S. Navy Dept., British Admiralty Office, and Lloyd's of London.
