Family correspondence addressed to R.S. McLucas, including letters from brothers Hugh and J.D. Hugh McLucas, sisters Martha and Mary Jane McLucas, and members of the extended family; antebellum letters, 17 May and Oct. 1860, from Hugh and J.D. McLucas re travels in Arkansas; letter, 5 Nov. 1860, from T.A. McRae, Clio, S.C., reporting excitement in Marlboro District with the arrest of persons suspected of "insurrectionary movements" and the presidential election. Civil War letters include 1 May 1861, from Hugh McLucas, Charleston, S.C., reporting that he had joined McQueen's Guards; 27 July 1861, from Hugh McLucas, Camp Victory, Vienna, Va., giving news of military actions, including battles near Fairfax and Centreville, Va., reporting that the Yankees had suffered heavy casualties and left behind much equipment and ordnance, and describing the horror of "a battlefield, covered with dead and dying men." Letter, 23 May 1864, from J.D. McLucas, Bivouac near Hanover Junction, Va., giving an account of Grant's attempt to outflank Lee and hailing the "cheering intelligence ... from every quarter"; 2 September 1864, from J.D. McLucas, Camp near Winchester, Va., reporting that he was sitting on a court martial involving captains Townsend and Joy who were accused of cowardice. Items relating to education include letter, 25 Jan. [18]62, from J.D. McLucas, commending him upon his decision to teach school; contractual agreement, 1 Feb. 1863, Selkirk, Marion District, S.C., agreement to hire R.S. McLucas as teacher for a ten-month period; letter, 27 November 1863, from Mary Jane McLucas, awaiting an offer to teach at Clio, S.C., at a salary of from $800 to $1000 per annum. Post-war letters include that of J.D. McLucas, 22 Aug. 1867, written from Marion, S.C., re life during Reconstruction, noting presence of U.S. troops and detectives "going about the Country arresting persons who were concerned in committing murders &c or Deserters, negroes &c during the war," complaining that people were slow to register and fearful that "if they do not do better in future ... the negroes will take and rule the Country." Late-19th-century documents reveal Roderick McLucas' proposed removal to Florida in the mid- 1880s and the education of family members at Presbyterian High School, Mebane, N.C., and Presbyterian College, Clinton, S.C.
