Consisting of notes and materials from two studies prepared during early 1970s. Report (1 folder : 80 sheets) and supporting notes (three-ring binder) and complete list of names and locations re private schools in operation around South Carolina ca. 1971; Norton compiled this report on these "segregation academies" on behalf of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) [folder and notes filed in carton]. Second project documented consists of notes, interviews, and supporting materials prepared for a study on economic development in S.C.; this study conducted by Norton along with Timothy F. Rogers for the Southern Regional Council; persons represented include a Mr. "Bedenbaugh" (of Lee County, S.C.); Ed Burgess (of State Development Board); Mayor W. Campbell of Gifford (Hampton County, S.C.); Burt Coffin; Thylan Davis (community organizer of Beaufort, S.C.); Drake Edens; Earl Ellis (of State Development Board); Howard Folkman; Sam Ford (Director of Area Development, 6th Congressional District, Florence, S.C.); Tapp Funderburke; Pete Gravely; Ann Jennings (of S.C. Environmental Coalition); Geroge Johnson (Liberty Corporation); James Johnson; historian Ernest Lander; Dick Lewis (of Marion County, S.C.); Harry Lockwood; Brady McKay (SCE & G); Bonner Manley; Wesley Pitts; Jack Riley; Alex Sanders; Bob Whittaker; and others. List of 28 persons prominent in S.C. industry and government interviewed, and notes recorded filed in carton, along with 33 cassette recordings of interviews; includes several officials and employees of the S.C. State Development Board.

The Help Our Public Education (HOPE) project was established in 1958 by a group of community leaders and concerned citizens to disseminate information regarding school integration in Georgia.
