Fosma and Sidney Rood papers, 1918-1977.

The Fosma and Sidney Rood Papers consist of Sidney's field notes, reports, and other papers written while employed by the Alaska Reindeer Service, and a large number of photographs of reindeer herders, reindeer herding, and the Roods' family life. Some of Sidney's correspondence, marked unsent, uses strong language to vividly describe details of the prejudice and ignorance of some of the white agents who dealt with the Native herders. The collection also contains blueprints of reindeer corrals, a map with cabin and roadhouse locations, counting and marking records for the herds in the Unalakleet area, articles and reports concerning wolf predation on the reindeer herds, and photographs from Sidney's years in Southeast and Southcentral Alaska.
