The June Metcalfe Northwest Alaska Collection consists of photographs, clippings, typed transcriptions of diaries and interviews, a small number of local publications, a few original manuscript items, and Metcalfe's research notes, all dealing primarily with Nome, Unalakleet, and other locations in northwestern Alaska. Materials include a typescript of the diary of Arthur Olsen, kept in Nome and Solomon, Alaska, July 1906-June 1907, along with a typescript of a letter written by Olsen to his brother and sister from Nome in August 1906 and a typed transcription of an interview with Olsen in 1962; an itemized financial account of Axel E. Karlson (Swedish Covenant Church at Unalakleet) with [Eskimo] Okitkon, 1905-06, in manuscript; manuscript time sheets for the All Alaska Sweepstakes Dog Sled Races (1908, 1910-12, 1914-15); a printed prospectus and annual report for the Phoenix Northern Trading Company, Captain C. I. Olsen, early 1920s; a carbon typescript of a log kept by photographer Edward S. Curtis during a summer in northwestern Alaska (1927); and biographical material on Dr. Curtis Welsh (physician in Nome during the diphtheria epidemic) and his wife Lula. The photographs depict Nome, Unalakleet, Ukivok, and Pilgrim Hot Springs, Alaska, as well as Eskimos, reindeer herding, aviation, and mining.
