Richards, regarding Gibson's overland journey from Bates County, Missouri (May 15, 1847) to Linnton, Oregon (November 1847); remembers train captain and Indian chief smoking from "pipe of peace" to avoid hostilities with tribe; lost several members of family to "mountain fever." Later entries mention early years in Oregon.
