[Collection of letters to J. Grey Jewell, 1861-1870] [1861-1870]

Eight hand-written letters written to J. Grey Jewell, plus one typescript of one of the hand-written letters, from, among others, William Tecumseh Sherman. Another letter with several signatories recommends Jewell for the position of U.S. Postmaster General. Collection also includes a document permitting Jewell to "pass over any bridge or ferry to Virginia" through the end of March, dated March 21, 1862, and signed by the Aide-de-Camp of A. Porter, Brig. Gen. U. S. A., Provost Marshall. Jewell was a major in the U.S. Army from Mississippi during the Civil War and later served as Consul to Singapore.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance.
