Edward Dahlberg papers, 1921-1971.

The collection consists of typescript and photocopy typescript manuscripts for Dahlberg's published and unpublished novels, novellas, short stories and essays. Also included are galleys, page proofs and other pre-publication material. In addition to the writings are 121 letters written by Dahlberg to William R. Holman and Harold W. Billings, Dahlberg's publisher and editor respectively, together with 43 letters between Billings and Holman. This correspondence took place between 1965 and 1967. Two interesting additions to the collection are a series of 13 autograph letters (1921-1929) from D.H. Lawrence to Dahlberg in reference to Dahlberg's novel Bottom Dogs; and a series of 24 typescript letter from Dahlberg to novelist/poet Fanny Howe during the years 1964-1967.

Harold W. Billings joined the University of Texas Libraries in 1954 as a library assistant and retired in 2003 after serving as the director of the Libraries for 25 years. David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon.
