Incorporated in 1880 under the laws of the state of Minnesota, the company purposed to construct and operate a rail line from the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba tracks between St. Cloud and Alexandria to the western boundary of the state between Lake Traverse and Big Stone Lake. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
