Data on the Whalen Trading Post, 1962.

Four letters containing data on the site of the Whalen Trading Post, which was located near Greenwood Lake, between Beaver Bay and Tower, Lake County, Minnesota. The correspondence is between Robert C. Wheeler, Minnesota Historical Society, and officials of the U.S. Forestry Service in Duluth. The post and the trail to it were constructed during the Vermilion gold rush of 1866. Included with one letter is a copy of an article from the Two Harbors Chronicle and Times (August 25, 1949) about the Vermilion Gold Rush, Christian Wieland's search for gold and discovery of iron ore, and the opening of a trading post by the Wielands at Greenwood Lake.
