Letterbook, 1811-1819 [microform].

A letterbook containing correspondence (August 14, 1811 to September 8, 1815) between the Earl of Selkirk and Alexander MacDonald. The letters were written from various places in Canada (Callender and Fort William), from England (London) and Scotland (Edinburgh, Kirkcudbright, and St. May's Isle), and relate to Selkirk's plans to bring Scottish settlers to Canada for settlement and for employment with the Hudson's Bay Company.

Born at St. Mary's Isle, Scotland, June 20, 1771; studied at Edinburgh; succeeded his father as Earl of Selkirk, 1799; became interested in the Highlanders and convinced of necessity for emigration; settled a colony of eight hundred on Prince Edward Island, 1803, and started settlement of Baldoon in Upper Canada near Detroit.
