The paper was presented at the Tri-County Historical Assembly held at Two Harbors, Minnesota on August 22, 1929. Accompanied by two letters, McLean to Ernest Oberholtzer (March, 1931), containing information on the remains of a fur trade dock located near Grand Portage, and a chart identifying the dock.

Oberholtzer was well known as an explorer, conservationist and writer. In 1912 he settled in the Rainy Lake area of northern Minnesota.
