Correspondence, political files, subject files, personal files, news clippings, print materials, and sound and visual materials of Karl F. Rolvaag, son of Minnesota author Ole Edvart Rolvaag, chairman of the state Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (1950-1954), Minnesota lieutenant governor (1955-1962), Minnesota governor (1963-1967), U.S. ambassador to Iceland (1967-1969), and member of the Minnesota Public Service Commission (1973-1978). The political files include extensive documentation covering Rolvaag's 1946, 1948 and 1952 Congressional campaigns, his 1962 contested gubernatorial election, and his 1966 gubernatorial campaign. Included are campaign materials, financial records, poll files, schedules, speeches, press releases, and subject files regarding topical issues, convention delegates, and volunteer committees. Additional files reflect Rolvaag's activities in the campaigns of Orville L. Freeman, Hubert H. Humphrey, and John F. Kennedy. The collection also contains a large proportion of personal and professional correspondence covering both his political activities and his U.S. diplomatic service. Less extensive materials document Rolvaag's World War Two army service in the Fourth Armored Division.
