Originally incorporated in 1885 as the Farmers Railway Navigation and Steamboat Portage Company, it changed its name in 1890 and, in 1900-1901, constructed a nine-mile railroad line along the north bank of the Columbia River in Klickitat County between Lyle and Maryhill. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
