Joseph Shaw papers, 1857-1889.

Letters (1857) of this Washington County (Minn.) settler to his wife Jane in New York, describing Hudson, Wisconsin, and Afton, Minnesota; early settlers of both places; his day labor work; and the St. Croix Valley. Shaw eventually purchased a farm near Lakeland, Minnesota where his wife and children joined him. Included also are data on Lakeland residents (1873). Entries give the individual's name, property value and investments, birthplace, and religion.

Rev. Joseph Shaw came to Australia in 1862 and was appointed Missionary to the Aborigines of Australia on October 17th, 1862. He undertook Christian missionary work with Aborigines at Yelta, a Church of England mission near the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, from 1862-1866. Later he served at the Poonindie Mission in South Australia as Assistant Manager; at Coranderrk Mission, Vic. from 1882-1885; and as a Superintendent of Coranderrk, 1885-1908.
