Howard S. Abbott and family papers, 1859-1948.

Family letters, legal papers, personal memorabilia, and genealogical data of Abbott, a Minneapolis attorney who was associated with various railroads for most of his career and who served as a master in chancery and a U.S. commissioner to the federal court, Minnesota district. There is correspondence with colleagues at the state and national levels; letters and legal papers concerning the receivership (1923) of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad; letters (1893-1895) from William Lochren, U.S. commissioner of pensions, on social life in Washington, D.C., national politics, the panic of 1893, and the First National Bank of Minneapolis; correspondence with Union Pacific Railroad officials about the company's historical records; a few letters on the Mississippi River upper harbor project at Minneapolis (1942); and printed copies of Abbott's lectures in the University of Minnesota law school.

Born in County Tyrone, Ireland (now Northern Ireland), Lochren read law to enter the bar in 1856.
