Typescript copy of overland diary kept from Missouri (April 16, 1845) until Field's illness from "camp fever" (September 24, 1845); Field was part of group led by Stephen Meek on long detour to The Dalles; arrived in Oregon City, Oregon (November 1845); excellent narrative account of journey.

James Field was a native of Port Chester, New York. He came to Oregon with a wagon train in 1845, settling at first in Oregon City. In 1849 he led a party to the Missouri River, and later continued to the east coast. Shortly thereafter he returned to Portland by ship via San Francisco. He died in 1903 in Port Chester.
