Collection comprises incoming and outgoing correspondence, literary manuscripts and writings, notebooks and travel diaries, and several photographs by American botanist Lilla Irvin Leach reflecting her career as a botanist, primarily in the Pacific Northwest, and her interests conservation, horticulture, and gardening. Collection also includes writings by her husband John R. Leach and others.

Lilla Irvin Leach (1886-1980) was a field botanist who specialized in Oregon flora from 1915-1945. She discovered more than a dozen species and two new genera, Kalmiopsis leachiana and Bensoniella oregana. Lilla and her husband John Roy Leach (1882-1972) purchased a tract of land in southeast Portland where they developed a botanical garden named Sleepy Hollow.
