Included are correspondence, 1805-1869; commonplace book, 1800- 1851 (including records of slave births); account books, 1782?-1878 (7 v., concerning estates, land purchases in Arkansas, and agricultural and household expenses at "Gravel Hill," Charlotte County, Va.); loose accounts, 1801-1878; and miscellaneous legal documents of planter George Hannah (1782?-1870); and records, 1806-1823, concerning Hannah's cavalry unit, the 26th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, of the Virginia militia. Also included are correspondence, 1835-1888; account books, 1859- 1888 (4 v., concerning the estate of Samuel Hannah [1792-1859], household and agricultural expenses at "Gravel Hill");and miscellaneous legal documents of planter George Cunningham Hannah (1817-1888), including records,1821-1886, of the Cub Creek Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member, and records, 1871-1882, of the Roanoke Township school board, on which he served. Also included is correspondence of Ann Eliza (Spragins) Hannah (1827-1873) and Margaret McDowell (Venable) Hannah (1832-1923) including letters from children attending the Virginia Military Institute, Peace Institute, Raleigh, N.C., and Charlotte Female Institute, Charlotte, N.C.; diary, 1899-1903, of Margaret McDowell (Venable) Hannah; and miscellaneous items such as cookbooks, 1850, 1873-1880, and genealogical materials for the Hannah and related families.

On March 29, 1839 the General Aslsembly passed the final version of the act establishing a military school at the Lexington arsenal, where the students would protect the arms while pursuing educational courses. The School was named the Virginia Military Institute and is the nation's oldest state supported military college.
