On March 22, 1948, Iowa State College (University) sponsored a 90th anniversary celebration in honor of the founding of the college, which occurred on the same date in 1858 when the charter act establishing a state agricultural college became law. Lincoln, James Rush, 1845-1922.

Rush served as a military officer in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I. He was born in Maryland and moved to Boone, Iowa in 1868 and then to Ames in 1882 where he worked in the military and engineering departments at Iowa State College.
