The collection contains materials pertaining to French's personal history and the founding of the American War Mothers. Personal items include letters from her brother Frank concerning family business, and genealogical information. American War Mothers materials include letters from French as national president emeritus; articles of incorporation and by-laws; stock shares; a scrapbook and organizational history by French; a scrapbook of clippings; and a letter from the assistant postmaster general promising a stamp honoring the organization. There are also photographs of French, American War Mothers members, and other people and places.

Born in Johnson County, Ind., French attended the Boston (Mass.) School of Art and Design before marrying Eli M. French in 1887. Upon her husband's death in 1894, she moved to Woodruff Place in Indianapolis. French is best remembered as the founder of the state and national divisions of the American War Mothers in 1917.
