Papers regarding the history of Albemarle County, Va. and the Society, 1837-1974.

The collection contains items dealing with Albemarle County history collected by Society member Atcheson Laughlin Hench, including a judge's opinion on an estate case; a letter from the Peninsula campaign; William Cabell Rive's reply to Albemarle citizens addressing him regarding the convention of 1861; the February 28, 1837 issue of the Washington Globe which contains a letter from Andrew Jackson to the citizens of Albemarle. Also included are a 1943 rabies broadside; various reprints and clippings; two papers presented to the Society by Haidee Watson Perkins Michie entitled The Piedmont Hospital and The Park St. School; an article by A.L. Hench entitled The Name Albemarle Pippin; and a 1940 Confederate memorial address by Walter Alexander Montgomery. Items pertaining to the Society include a summary, 1958, of the Society's altercation with Michie Tavern over the tavern's authenticity; a 1966 map of old Charlottesville published by the Society; A.L. Hench's The First Ten Years of the Albemarle County Historical Society; and Hench's correspondence and notes regarding that article. Among the correspondents are Harry Clemons, Robert Douthat Meade, and John Cook Wyllie.
