The Army of the Potomac was created after the defeat of Union forces at the First Battle of Bull Run. Its objective was to defend Washington, D.C. by protecting the Potomac River entry into the city. The Army of the Potomac participated in the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days' Battles, Antietam, Gettysburg and Appomatox.
