Nelson Whitney papers, 1861-1862.

Consisting of letter, 8 Dec. [18]61, from N[elson] Whitney to "Dear Sue," written "10 miles below Charleston, S.C." on board the ship Cosmopolitan, a side-wheeler steamer en route to Port Royal, S.C., from New York. Letter reports stories of seasickness, sightings of "sea hogs" or porpoises, provisions while at sea, and a description of Port Royal Sound and Union ships assembled there, and conditions on Otter Island and the division of land, livestock, crops, and farming utensils among the Union soldiers. Accompanying the letter is a transcription and photocopies of Whitney's military service record, 1861-1862.
