J.J. Toon letter, 1857.

The collection consists of a letter dated Charleston, South Carolina, 22 July 1857, and addressed to the Rev. J.N. (J.H.) DeVotie. This letter is on the stationery of the Southern Baptist Publication Society. Toon, and important Southern printer and publisher, was at this time financial secretary for that organization and proprietor of its bookstore. During and after the Civil War, Toon became a major force in the growth of publishing in Atlanta and his Franklin Steam Power Press began turning out humorous titles to uplift the Southern reading public. The letter relates to book sales and Toon's philosophy of management.

J.J. Toon was the proprietor of the Franklin Printing House in Atlanta, Ga. J. H. DeVotie was hired as the first professional leader of the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1877.
