Shaw Dublin testimonial, 1876-1878.

A reference (testimonial) written by C. Uniacke Townshend about Bernard Shaw's employment as a cashier for his office of land agent in 1876. The testimonial was soliticited by Shaw's father, and is dated 9th August 1878. The idea was to get the young G.B.S. into a steady job, which made Shaw furious when confronted with it. Included is the envelope in which the testimonial was send to Shaw's mother in London. A transcription and the envelope are mounted on blank sheets of an album bound in blue leather with gilt. Inserted is the original handwritten testimonial; and a negative, photograph and enlargement of Shaw and John Thomas Gibbings, one of the junior clerks in the office. The photograph was taken by Lauder Bros. in Dublin, probably in 1876 just before Shaw's departure from Dublin at the age of 20. It is one of the earliest pictures of Shaw.
