The collection contains materials relating to Elijah Roberts and his family, including business papers, tax receipts, appraisals, and promissory notes. Most of the materials have to do with Roberts Settlement in Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Ind. Elijah Roberts' papers include a copy of his 1820 freedom papers, his will, and his business papers. Also included are materials pertaining to Roberts' son Peter, daughter Martha, and granddaughter Almary Roberts Wallace. There is also a history of the Cabin Creek African Episcopal Methodist Church in Randolph County, Ind., and clippings, a news journal, and newsletter relating to Roberts Settlement. Photographs of a Roberts Settlement reunion are stored in Visual Collections.

Roberts migrated from North Carolina to Ohio in 1825, and by 1830 had moved to Rush County, Ind. With relatives he formed the free black community of Beech Settlement. In 1835 Roberts and his relatives purchased land in Hamilton County, Ind. and formed Roberts Settlement. After Elijah Roberts' death in 1848, his wife continued farming the land, and Roberts family descendants inherited or continued to purchase land. Roberts and Beech Settlements continue to have annual homecoming reunions. ...
