Papers of David Bell Macgowan, 1905-1918, 1939.

MacGowan's papers consist of articles about Russia written while he was stationed there, several speeches about the same subjects and a journal Filming the Eastern front, 1917,about his trip to the Romanian front to film war activities there. In it he describes Kiev, Odessa and Ia-si, the battle of Marasesti, 1917, the Romanian royal family, refugees, and the Romanian soldiers whom he contrasts with the Russians. Topics of his articles and speeches include an analysis of the country in 1907 in regard to land reform, the Duma, religious persecution by the Orthodox Church, current political leaders, an analysis of what a Russian democracy would be like, the state of the Russian revolution in 1918, the Volga River, roots of the German-Russian collision, 1939, and Tolstoy and Turgenev.
