Papers of Kate Flanagan Coles, 1879-1936.

The collection contains three letters, 1924-1934, to May Dabney and Mrs. E. Ruffin Jones concerning presents she received at Christmas and other holidays, visits of friends, her recent illness, her children and other family news. Other items include a short account with S.S. Young for coal and butter, a copy of the typescript, The generations of Gale Hill by Kate Coles and a photograph of several University of Virginia students, ca. 1892. In "The generations of Gale Hill," Kate Coles describes her childhood as a slave at Gale Hill in Albemarle County, Va. which was owned by William Wardlaw Minor. Coles' parents, James and Ann Flanagan, were coachman and seamstress at Gale Hill and Coles also became a seamstress there. She writes about learning to read and write from Malvina Terrell, Sunday School classes, preachers (white and black) that she remembered, visitors to Gale Hill, the Civil War hospital in Charlottesville and various weddings and parties held at Gale Hill.
