George Larsen papers, 1863 July 3-Nov. 11.

Chiefly letters, 3 July - 11 Nov. 1863, written by Larsen in Newberry and Spartanburg, S.C., to Capt. S.C. Means, Confederate States of America Subsistance Department, re his activities in procuring subsistence stores with references to impressment of supplies, collection of wheat as tax-in-kind, the operation of grist and flour mills, and related concerns. Includes typescript of letter, 16 Aug. 1863, from Capt. Means, Spartanburg, S.C., authorizing Larsen to make impressments and advising, "it is desirable you should class your subjects as follows: 1st the speculator; 2nd the man who encourages the speculator; 3rd the man who sells to any one for more than government price, and in the same class I would include those who refuse to sell." Also including letter, 24 Aug. 1863, Newberry, S.C., to Means, inquiring if it would not be necessary to rent storage facilities as the government planned to remove the track of the Laurens Railroad; and letter, 8 Sept. 1863, Newberry, S.C., to Means, identifying mills that had agreed to grind wheat and giving their locations; [some letters illegible].
