John Pitts Sheldon papers, 1816-1855, 1909.

Letters and accounts of Major Sheldon, editor of Detroit, Michigan's first newspaper, the Detroit Gazette, and first register of the land office at Mineral Point, Wisconsin, 1834. Included are printer's advertising accounts for 1818-1821; and miscellaneous accounts including those for the building of a home at Peru, Iowa, 1832-1834. Among the letters are those of the Sheldon, Whiting, and Gratiot families, and Sheldon's own correspondence with Lucius Lyon, Arthur Bronson, his brother, Thomas C. Sheldon of Detroit, and Lewis Cass. With these papers is a volume containing a list of voters in the 2nd Congressional District kept by Senator Henry Dodge, 1855, and an autobiographical sketch written by Sheldon's son, Thomas H. Sheldon.

John P. Sheldon was born in Rhode Island in 1792, and, after service in the War of 1812, with A.G. Dauby, establishing in Rochester, New York that city's first newspapers, the Gazette. A year later, in 1817, he sold his interests to Dauby, and headed towards the Northwest.
