Joachim F. Wohlwill, born in Hamburg, Germany, on September 27, 1928, left Europe as a teenager to escape the Holocaust and grew up with an American family near Boston. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard, earning his undergraduate degree in social relations, and completed his doctorate in psychology at the University of California at Berkeley.
