Joachim F. Wohlwill, born in Hamburg, Germany, on September 27, 1928, left Europe as a teenager to escape the Holocaust and grew up with an American family near Boston. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard, earning his undergraduate degree in social relations, and completed his doctorate in psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer."
