The Margaret Elizabeth Bell Papers consist of manuscript drafts, galley proofs, and page proofs of several of Bell's books for young people, as well as notes for some of Bell's poetry and prose, journals, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Also included are photographs of family and Southeast Alaskan scenes.

Margaret E. Bell (1898-1990) was a third-generation Alaskan. Born at Thorne Bay on Prince of Wales Island, where her father owned a salmon saltery, she was raised in Southeast Alaska and Washington State. Her first book, "Pirates of Icy Strait," was published in 1942. After a stint with the Red Cross on Attu Island during World War II, she took up residence at Loring, Alaska, to resume her writing career.
