The Clarence Kilde Papers consist primarily of materials collected by Clarence Kilde for a proposed biography of artist Sydney Laurence (1865-1940): Interviews (1944-1947), Correspondence (1945-1956), Photographs (Alaskan scenes, Laurence paintings, photos taken by Laurence as professional photographer, and photos of Laurence himself), and assorted research notes. They also include several newspaper clippings relating to the career of Clarence Kilde and several World War II-era brochures relating to Alaska.

While stationed in Alaska as an army chaplain in 1943-1945, Clarence Kilde became fascinated with Sydney Laurence's paintings and the life of the man who had produced them. He helped organize a memorial showing of Laurence's work at the U.S.O. Club in Anchorage, Alaska, at the end of January 1945. Over the course of two months preceding the show and another month thereafter, he interviewed a number of people in Anchorage who had known the artist personally.
