Lydia C. Hopkins papers, 1825-1876.

This collection contains a large number of materials on Michigan public men and measures, many of them of decided interest. Included are eight Thanksgiving proclamations, 1826-1834 and 1873-1878. Also included are numerous petitions and memorials to the Territorial and State legislatures and to the Governors of Michigan requesting organizations of towns, appointments of particular men to office and dealing with other public matters. Reports of Douglass Houghton on the geological survey of Michigan in th 1830s, and of the State Board entrusted with the Michigan exhibition at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in the 1870's are contained in the collection.

The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 marked the 100th anniversary of American freedom. The celebration took place in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10 and attracted over eight million visitors. The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
