The collection includes four account books, 1806-1823, kept by John Patterson (1760-1824), a merchant in Mathews County, Va. Also, includes correspondence, 1807-1836, of Christopher Tompkins (1778-1838) of "Poplar Grove," Mathews County, Va., concerning activities as a merchant and ship owner; five account books, 1798-1828, in part concerning the operations of a store in Mathews County; and loose accounts. Also, includes correpondence, 1832-1869, of Christopher Quarles Tompkins (1813-1877), of "Gauley Mount," Fayette County, W. Va., and Richmond, Va., concerning coal mining in Chesterfield and Goochland counties, Va., and his service in the 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. (including letters from Edmund Ruffin and Henry Alexander Wise); two account books, 1840-1843 and 1852-1854; loose accounts and banking records; records, 1852-1854, of Tompkins & Gwynn (proprietors of the Richmond Iron and Steel Works); records of Tompkins's service in the 3rd Artillery Regiment, U.S.A., 1839-1847; and a commonplace book, 1863-1867, kept in part as a diary at the Dover Coal Mines, Goochland County, Va.
