Collection includes letterbooks, 1801-1802 and 1804-1825, kept by Christopher Tompkins (1778-1838) as captain of the "Dart," "Industry," "Thomas Wilson," and other merchant ships sailing out of Mathews County and Norfolk, Va., and an account book, 1801-1805. Also, includes a diary, 1839, kept by Christopher Quarles Tompkins (1813-1877) while serving in the 3rd Artillery Regiment, U.S.A., in Florida, and a letterbook, 1839- 1847, kept while serving in Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, and North Carolina (includes letters written from Mathews Court House, Va.).
