Collection includes correspondence, 1800-1835, of Christopher Tompkins (1778-1838) of "Poplar Grove," Mathews County, Va., and as captain of the merchant ships "Atalanta" and "Thomas Wilson," in part concerning ship construction; and records of the 61st Infantry Regiment of Virginia militia, commanded by Tompkins. Also, includes a diary, 1863, kept by Christopher Quarles Tompkins (1813-1877) in Richmond, Va., in part concerning the Dover Coal Mines in Goochland County, the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, and Tompkins's service in the Virginia militia; and correspondence, 1841-1868, in Richmond and while serving with the 3rd Artillery Regiment, U.S.A., and 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. Also, includes letters, 1863- 1864, written to Dr. Christopher Tompkins (1848-1918) by Jack Foster (an African-American slave) in camp with the 36th Virginia Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., in Mercer County, W. Va.
