Diary, 1849-1859.

The first volume, 1849, of William Price Craighill's diary concerns his education at Charlestown Academy in Charles Town, Va. (now W. Va.). Volumes two through eight cover his education at the United States Military Academy at West Point through 1852 and then pick up again in 1857 with reminiscences of school life. Volume eight, 1859, also concerns Craighill's service in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Savannah, Ga., Fort Sumter, S.C., Key West, Fla., Washington, D.C., and Fort Delaware, Del. Enclosed with the diary is a photocopy of a letter of Craighill to his mother, 1861, concerning his decision not to leave the U.S. Army to join the Confederacy.

A native of Charles Town, Jefferson County, Va. (now W. Va.), William Price Craighill was educated locally and at the United States Military Academy. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for many years, rising to the rank of brigadier general.
