Records : of Stewart, Nesbitt, and Company, 1757-1940 (bulk 1782-1796).

The collection consists mainly of business and personal correspondence (some in French and Spanish), financial papers, legal documents, materials relating to the ships (including cargo manifests and insurance policies), genealogical papers on the Stewart family and acquaintances, and miscellany. Various ports of call mentioned in the ships' papers include Amsterdam, Bordeaux, Charleston, Dominica, Havana, Hispaniola, Kingston, Liverpool, and Port-au-Prince; sailing ships to these ports include Adventure, Betsy, Don Francisco, Favorite, Greyhound, Hannibal, Hawke, and William. Also, includes receipts of slaves sold, with their first names and prices, and letters during the American Revolution to Nesbitt and Stewart. Photographs of a family carriage said to have carried the Marquis de Lafayette, and of a full length painting of Walter Stewart painted by Charles Wilson Peale in 1784 are included.
