The New Orleans, the first steamboat to navigate western waters, sailed from Pittsburgh bound for New Orleans in 1811. Built by Nicholas Roosevelt and backed by steamship builder Robert Fulton, the New Orleans proved that steam powered vessels could navigate the western waters.
