Journal, scrapbook, and an essay discussing current events and politics in South Carolina during late 19th century, consisting of scrapbook, 1888-1890, of newspaper clippings re political controversies, violence, economic and taxation issues, obituraries, and other issues in South Carolina. Journal, 23 Mar. 1890 - Jan. 1892, "Book Thirteenth," resuming his diary after a long break, recording activities as a student at Wofford College and his participation in a Greek fraternity ogranizaiton, and later as a teacher at Chappells, S.C. [an edited and transcribed version of this volume available at Wofford College, completed by Maureen P. Ward as part of a senior honor's thesis in 1989]. Essay, "The Political Situation in South Carolina," Nov. 1890 (with two additional essays appended during Nov. and Dec. 1890), a paper read before the Preston Society at Wofford College written in response to a published letter written by Judge Alexander Cheves Haskell; briefly discussed topics include antebellum, Civil War, Reconstruction eras, and the 1876 election of Gov. Wade Hampton, with primary focus on the 1890 election of Gov. Ben Tillman, divisions among members of the Democratic party during the election of 1890, and impact of African-American voters.

Alexander Cheves Haskell (1839-1910) was a Confederate Army officer, lawyer, and jurist of South Carolina. He was the son of Charles Thomson Haskell (1802-1873) and Sophia Lovell Cheves (1809-1881). He married first Rebecca Singleton (1839-1862) and then Alice Van Yeveren Alexander (1848-1902).
