Papers of Edward Lebbaius Breeden, 1932-1972.

The collection contains legal, political, financial and some personal papers. Political papers from his career in the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate constitute the bulk of the material. They consist of correspondence, committee papers, study commission reports, bills and resolutions and miscellaneous papers from regular and special sessions. There is material from Breeden's campaigns, including his bid for the lieutenant-governor post in 1971, and from the presidential elections of 1956 and 1964. Many of the papers pertain to public education in Virginia, particularly desegregation and interposition. There are also papers from a wide variety of commissions and committees on which Breeden worked such as the Jamestown Festival Commission, the Democratic National Committee, the Virginia Governor's Commission on Education, the Virginia Ports Study Commission, the Virginia Democratio State Central Committee, the Virginia Advisory Legislative Council Committee to Study Annexation Laws, and the Virginia Court System Study Commission. Correspondents include John S. Battle, Harry F. Byrd, Sr., Mills E. Godwin, Porter Hardy, Estes Kefauver, A. Willis Robertson and G. Fred Switzer.
