Papers : of Dorothy Strickland, 1881, 1913-1970 (bulk 1913-1970).

The correspondence of Miss Strickland forms a large part of the collection. Letters, 1913-1919, from various beaux describe life at the University of Virginia and at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, as well as army life in France in World War I. Letters, 1923-1925, from her future husband, Louis Phillippe Smithey, discuss his architectural work in Roanoke and business travels. In the 1930s, letters from her mother, Nettie Muffly Strickland, describe her travels in England and comment on the reaction to the marriage and abdication of King Edward VIII. These letters also contain considerable anti- Italian and anti-Jewish sentiments. There is also correspondence from her sister, Jeanette Strickland Weaver, her brother-in-law, James Barnhart Weaver, her aunt May Muffly, and her grandfather S.T. Muffly. Files from her two years of law practice in Roanoke, 1923-1925, are chiefly concerned with debt collection. The papers also contain teen-age diaries, book reviews she wrote, legal papers chiefly about property she owned, photographs, clippings, school catalogs, travel guides, and memorabilia. Correspondents include James Malcolm Luck and Frank Rutherford Marston.
