Papers : of Edward Griffith Dodson, 1871-1969.

The collection contains the business, political and family papers of Dodson, clerk of the House of Delegates and his son Edward Griffith Dodson. The business papers consist chiefly of legal and financial papers about the Dodson Hotel Corporation and the Dodson Realty Co., and particularly with the management of the Atlantic and Lorraine Hotels, Norfolk, Va. Papers from his tenure on the Norfolk Board of Aldermen and its committees on finance and street railway consist of dockets and minutes concerned with finances and economic development through street and harbor improvement. With these are papers concerning the Bureau of Municipal Research survey of Norfolk, 1916, and the 13th annual National Rivers and Harbors Congress, 1916. Some constituent correspondence is found among his General Assembly papers. Insurance for state employees is a major topic. Small segments in the collection deal with his World War II Civil Defense service as an air warden training officer and civic and social organizations to which he belonged are included. These include the Sons of the American Revolution, Virginia Society; the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Khedive temple, Norfolk; the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Ruth Lodge #89, Norfolk; the Norfolk Boat Club; the Norfolk German Club; the Woodrow Wilson League of College Men, Norfolk; and the Society of the Lees of Virginia. The British goodwill mission to the Jamestown Festival and the responding 350th annisversary commission tour to England, 1955, are frequently mentioned. Dodson had a deep interest in Virginia and Norfolk history and much historical information including genealogy and memoirs of his Virginia Beach boyhood are included. The collection also contains much family correspondence, photographs of World War II battleships, personal account books and scrapbooks. There is routine or friendly correspondence with many Virginia politicians including James Lindsay Almond, Harry Byrd, Sr., Colgate Whitehead Darden, Joseph Thomas Deal, Patrick Henry Drewry, Douglas Southall Freeman, Mills Edwin Godwin, Albertis Sydney Harrison, Albert Sydney Johnson, Francis Pickens Miller, John Paul, George Campbell Peery, and Absalom Willis Robertson. Others include Thomas Bahnson Stanley, Elbert Lee Trinkle, William Munford Tuck, Henry St. George Tucker and John W. Williams. There is correspondence of more import from Harry Flood Byrd, Jr., Burr Powell Harrison and Claude Augustus Swanson.
