Chiefly family letters documenting Watson's education and business travel. Principal correspondents include Watson's parents, Harry Legare and Ella Dargan Watson; Watson's sisters, including Louise, who worked in Newark, N.J., and New York City during the 1920s; and Ella Virginia, who worked in Charleston during World War II. Includes letters, 1926-1927, re Watson's service as engineer for Southern Railway; and letters, 1928-1929, re Watson's travels for John Wylie & Sons as college textbook sales representative throughout Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. Also includes correspondence re Waton's activities as student and instructor at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he earned his B.A. in 1928 and M.A. in 1934; as teacher, 1934-1936, at Lehigh University, Bethelehem, Penn.; and as associate professor, 1939-1941, at Duke University, Durham, N.C.; together with letters from Harvard University, where he earned a Ph. D. in civil engineering, 1941; letters, 1941-1945, re Watson's work for J.A. Jones Construction Company as site engineer in building a military base at Camp McCain, Grenada, Miss., and as chief engineer for the construction project at Oak Ridge, Tenn; and report, 1945, re company travels in Ecuador and views of Ecuadoran politics, the Pan American Highway Project, and the country's potential for economic development. Other topics represented include Watson's partnership, beginning in 1945, with fellow Oak Ridge engineer James Hart in the firm of Watson and Hart, Greensboro, N.C.; H.L. Watson's journalism career in South Carolina; racial violence, 1880 and 1906; education of Elizabeth Watson at Greenville Woman's College, and Margaret and Ella Virginia Watson at Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Ga.; impact of the Depression on local textile mills; opening of a new mill, Greenwood, S.C., 1937, and hopes that United Textile Worker union activity would be limited to mills at Gaffney, Spartanburg, and Union; "New Deal" and state politics, including an unfavorable opinion of Gov. Olin D. Johnston; and home front conditions during World War II. Earlier materials include letters, 1861-1883, of Alex S. Townes, David Crawford, G.F. Townes, and others.
