Salter family papers, 1860-1960; (bulk, 1860- 1946).

Consisting chiefly of correspondence of Newberry photographer J.Z. Salter, wife Sophronia Elizabeth Sheppard Salter, sons Jesse, Otway, and Leroy, daughters Elizabeth, Minnie and Mamie, together with letters of Mamie's husband, Newberry merchant and state legislator Arthur Kibler. Topics include photography and photo business, and use of Kodak cameras at the 1902 Inter-State and West Indian Exposition in Charleston. Other topics include fatal shooting of P.C. Smith by T.J. Davenport; lynching of a white man in Kershaw County; Elizabeth Salter's attendance at the 1905 South Atlantic Missionary Conference in Asheville, N.C., and visit to the Vanderbilt estate; Otway Salter's proposal for opening a chain of family-owned studios throughout South Carolina and Georgia and his concerns about business competition, including letter, 12 Feb. 1905, from Newberry, to Mamie and Jesse [Salter], Athens, Ga., re Newberry College senior class having selected Howie of Columbia for class photos. Letters of Arthur Kibler, from Newberry, Spartanburg, and Columbia, primarily to Mamie [Salter] (who married Kibler in 1909), discuss his mercantile business, attendance at a lecture by African-American preacher Richard Carroll, 1904 campaign for the General Assembly, opposition to the Dispensary law, support for Prohibition bill, and objection to $7500 appropriation for Columbia monument to women of the Confederacy. Other Arthur Kibler letters discuss support for bill to stop gambling on horse races in Charleston, and visit to the state by President Theodore Roosevelt in Oct. 1905; collection also includes 153 photographs, tintypes, and ambrotypes reflecting operations of family business in Newberry in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.
