Receipt book, 1812-1861; (bulk, 1815-1819).

Leather-bound receipt book (1812, 1815-1819, and 1861) with brass latch, recording payments of money received by sheriff and Clerk of Council William Joyner for licenses, taxes, and judgments. Includes records of payments for quills, a real of foolscap paper, lumber for a well at the jail; record of funds distributed by Joyner out of "fund for the transient poor"; receipts, 11 Nov. 1816, "for Confining 3 Negroes for riotous Conduct on the Sabbath," and 2 Aug. 1819, for $25 paid to Mr. Wilkins for "services during the Presidents Visit" in reference to James Madison's goodwill tour of the U.S.; and records of money received for the hiring-out of African American slaves identified by name. Order, 10 Aug. 1815, issued to W[illia]m Coleman to cease interfering in the estate of Sam[ue]l Laurence or "Mr. Joyner will be Compelled to put an Overseer on that Plantation with orders to prevent his going there"; tax returns, 1815-1816, for lands belonging to Joyner in McIntoth County, Ga.; record of blankets given to the slaves at Red House; and lists of slave families giving ages, occupations, and family relationships for plantations at Red House Tract, Port Royal Island, St. Helena Island, and Tom's Island. Family expenses documented include payment, 9 Jan. 1815, for attendance of Mayaretta and Ann Joyner at Mr Delaveaux's school.
