Letter, 1757 Sept. 22, Charleston, [S.C., to] Alex[ander] Brodie, Lethen, [Scotland].

Letter describing climate, geography, agricultural products, and economic conditions in the colony of South Carolina. Informs Brodie of his arrival in Charleston, S.C., on 2 Sept. 1757 "after a slow easy Passage of Nine Weeks" during which his ship enjoyed "the finest weather that ever was known," remarking that "the Coast makes much the same appearance with that of Holland, with this difference, that one sees some very fine Trees in place of Spires, there is not a rising Ground, within two hundred Miles of this Town." Grant also comments on the prevalent climate and diseases of the area, mentioning having "found five Companies of the Royal Americans" under the command of Lieut[enant] Colonel [Henry] Bocquet, "a genteel well bred man" who "seems to know his business." Concerning the economy of the colony and the war with France, Grant writes, "Ships from this place are frequently taken." which caused a financial loss to individuals, "The people here are rich, and were much alarmed for fear of a visit from the French, who probably would have taken the Rice & Indigo... which bring in large Sums... at the rate they are sold in England, and that single branch of Indigo, with which they'l[l] soon be able to supply Britain & Ireland, will bring the Ball[ance] of Trade to be in favor of this Colony."
