Phillips, Columbia, S.C., re concerts and musical activities in Columbia and New York, concerts, news of mutual friends in the music world, In a letter, 12 Jan. 1962, Hughes expresses surprise that the Ford Foundation awarded only one grant in 1962 to a choral director from the South, "for things musical are stepping ahead in the South and should receive encouragement," and also that "already well known and well established directors were so prominent on the list."
